Finding God in the Process: A Reflection
~Ramona McGonagil, LPCC~

In the midst of life’s storms, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s presence. Recently, I found myself facing a relational challenge with a loved one, a situation that brought me to my knees. Relationships, especially those closest to us, can be fraught with difficulties, shaking us to our core and igniting warning lights on our internal dashboards.

As I grappled with my situation, I turned to prayer, asking God to be present in my turmoil. Yet, I must confess, I didn’t immediately feel His presence. Angst and worry clouded my thoughts, and I longed for a quick fix—a vending machine God who would dispense solutions on demand. But God surprised me with something far greater.

In my desperation for control, I failed to fully trust Him. Though I prayed fervently, I clung tightly to the wheel, fixating on my problems instead of surrendering to God’s will. It was a lesson in relinquishing control and allowing God to navigate my path.

Reflecting on my prayer life, I recognize three levels of prayer. The first is the instinctive breath prayer, a plea for immediate intervention in times of crisis. The second, a process prayer, involves journeying with God through challenges, allowing Him to mold and shape us in His time. Finally, there’s the health prayer, beseeching God for physical or emotional healing.

In facing my family challenge, I engaged in a process prayer, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom. Through this journey, I learned to trust God wholeheartedly, embracing His peace and clarity amidst confusion. I also realized the folly of my impatience, acknowledging that God’s timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t align with my own.

Embracing God as a process rather than a quick fix transformed my perspective. He was there in every space of my life, guiding me and lighting my path, even when fear threatened to block His peace.

In our journey with God, we must equip ourselves with His tools—studying His Word, communing with Him in prayer, and following the example of Jesus Christ. For as Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

At Lighthouse Counseling, we are here to walk alongside you as you navigate life’s challenges, offering support and guidance as you write your story with grace and resilience. Let us journey together, trusting in God’s process and His unwavering love.

Lord, we ask you to show us the areas in our lives we think we know better. We invite you into our fear of surrendering ourselves fully to you and ask that you align our hearts to your heart. There are many things we cannot understand and want answers to, but we do know that we cannot maneuver all of those questions alone. You promise that you are with us in the midst of that…so we choose to open ourselves up to you. We give up control.
